Ken's record - Mayor of London
Under Ken as Mayor, 2000-2008:
- Safer neighbourhoods – a beat police team with a minmum of six officers in every ward in London dedicated to that community
- Record police numbers, up 5,397 from 26,001 officers in 2000 to 31,398 when Ken left office – and a total of 32,543 by the end of Ken’s final budget year
- Leading London through the terror attacks of 7/7 and the attempted bombings of 21/7
- Free bus and tram travel for all under-18s in full-time education delivered
- The only major city in the world to see a shift from car use to public transport
- Revival of the bus service – more buses with more frequent service on every route in London, plus massive increase in night bus routes, all buses low-floor and accessible to parents with prams, older and disabled Londoners, and CCTV on every bus to improve safety. A 40% increase in bus passengers. Average fares held level in real terms over 8 years.
- Congestion charging for central London – reducing traffic levels and raising funds for public transport
- London wins the bid to host the 2012 Olympics
- Backing lesbian and gay rights – Britain’s first civil partnership register, support for Pride and Soho Pride, working with Stonewall against homophobic bullying in schools, ensuring the Greater London Authority took a leading place in the Stonewall Employers’ Index

- Biggest transport investment programme since the Second World War – including securing the East London Line upgrade, extension of the DLR, taking over key parts of the rail network to create London Overground
