Putting Londoners first, not the interests of the Conservative party
Boris Johnson campaigned for a Conservative victory at the last general election – and David Cameron now says he needs Boris Johnson to win. Cameron told Boris Johnson “not only do I want you to win next year because we are friends, but I recognise that there is no way you losing would be seen as anything but a disaster for me.”
To make sure they are not damaged by protest votes from Londoners concerned about the direction of government policy, Cameron and Johnson are working to together to create false arguments or “differentiation.”
“Boris has been decoupling himself from the Tory leadership for months,” says the Telegraph “This is, in fact, an agreed strategy rather than a unilateral declaration of independence.”
The Telegraph has revealed the country’s two most powerful politicians – Cameron and George Osborne - are in regular text contact to agree this strategy with their man in City Hall: “In the near daily exchanges of text messages between the three, there is an informal understanding that when Boris plans to go off the reservation, he will alert the high command.”
Ken Livingstone will put Londoners first by speaking up for ordinary Londoners, not as an exercise in spin to help the Conservative party, but because people are being squeezed and they need an effective Mayor who cares about their problems
