Boris Johnson was making cuts before this government came to power and backs the direction of government policy on cuts, despite his cynical attempts at ‘differentiation’. On issue after issue he has failed to stand up for London.
Government policies have led to London’s unemployment rate rising to the second highest in Britain, with many parts of London significantly higher. Latest unemployment figures show London’s unemployment rate above the national average at 9.6%.
Boris Johnson campaigned for the Conservatives to be in power.
Of government spending cuts that are now damaging services and jobs in London, Boris Johnson said: ‘They're absolutely right to make cuts and you know we in the government in London have been making you know very substantial cuts for the last two years…“I don’t think there’s any part of government across Whitehall that’s moved so far and so fast to make cuts.” (Speaking on Andrew Marr Programme, 12th September 2010)
When transport funding has been cut by £2.1 billion (21%) Boris Johnson’s re-election campaign was ‘pleased’ and called it ‘a good settlement’
Under Boris Johnson, London has suffered bigger cuts than many other parts of the UK. This year London councils faced average funding cuts from government of 11.25% whilst the average for the rest of England was 9.93%.
